Everything You Need to Know Before an Underarm Waxing Appointment

Body hair: almost everyone has it, but whether it’s wanted or not is another question! After years of razor burn and irritation, it may be time to retire the razor and jump into something a little better: waxing. If you’re new to waxing and want to start your journey with removing underarm hair, we’ve got an easy guide to help you breeze right through your first waxing appointment.

There’s nothing like that silky smooth, freshly waxed underarm feeling

Whether you’re waxing your underarms, your bikini line, or even the small hairs on your face – get ready to feel absolutely stoked about your new hair-free skin. That soft, silky-smooth feeling of hydrated, hair free skin is the stuff dreams are made of.

Does waxing help with razor burn, ingrown hairs and unwanted texture?

Most of us have grown up our whole early adult life struggling to nail the shaving process. The constant battle between razor burn, cuts, and ingrown hairs never seemed to stop no matter what products or tools we used. The good news is that, with waxing, those issues become practically non-existent.

Here’s how:

The likelihood of cuts is non-existent, thanks to the lack of sharp blades. Additionally, the process of waxing results in the hair being removed directly at the root, from the follicle itself. Since there should be no remnants of the hair shaft, like there is with shaving, your results last much longer!

Can you wax your armpits without trimming your hair?

It’s important for individuals who typically shave to grow out their underarm hair prior to their wax appointment. Hair breakage is highly undesirable as it can actually break under the skin, resulting in the perfect conditions for ingrown hairs and poor waxing results. Try to keep any body hair being waxed around three quarters of an inch for best results. Slightly longer is okay, but having any hair shorter than that could also result in a poor wax.

Waxing your underarms can prevent and alleviate hyperpigmentation

For clients concerned about hyperpigmentation and other changes in skin color and texture, you can rest easy knowing that your professionals have you covered. If you’re looking to avoid long-term discoloration, or the potential of bumpy, uneven skin, toss your razor and book an appointment with a local esthetician. High quality products and a skillful hand leaves your skin glowing!

Pro tips to ensure a successful waxing session

Preparation is key. If you’re not familiar with getting waxed and proper pre and post-wax etiquette, we’re happy to provide you with the basics below. After all, we want you to feel as prepared and confident as possible before coming in for your first appointment!. We’ve lived through it and want to make sure you don't have to.

Exfoliate a few days prior to knock those ingrown hairs loose

Before we go over what you should avoid prior to your waxing session, let’s go over one of the most important pre-waxing tasks: exfoliating. Exfoliating the area you plan on removing hair from not only leaves you with skin that is soft and smooth, but it also breaks up the layers of dry, dead skin. Additionally, exfoliating helps remove any dirt, sweat, or body oil that has accumulated in that area, giving the wax the best possible surface to adhere to. As a general practice, we recommend exfoliating around two days prior to your appointment but no sooner than 24 hours in advance.

Avoid tanning, swimming, and skip the deodorant! (yes, really)

Now, for the important stuff! Believe it or not, there are quite a few things you should avoid and stop doing prior to getting your wax. First on our list is tanning in any form. Whether you go to the salon, lay by the pool, or enjoy long days at the beach, increased UV exposure can interfere with the integrity of your wax and cause unnecessary damage to your skin. When possible, avoid direct and prolonged sun exposure for at least a week before your waxing appointment.

Additionally, try to avoid pools and hot tubs before your session. Exposure to chlorine can add additional stress and irritation to your skin before your wax. Most importantly, cut out retinol products from your routine as waxing while using retinol can create serious issues. Our final recommendation would be to avoid deodorant – at least for the 24 hours leading up to your appointment.

Participating in any of these activities could result in your waxing session being postponed, so steer clear!

Plan your outfit and wear something flowy, loose fitting and lightweight

Just like any wax, you’re going to want to plan your outfit in advance, and no, this isn’t because we know how confident you’ll feel after your wax! Loose fitting clothing allows your newly-waxed skin to breathe and avoid feeling smothered by form-fitting outfits. This rule is especially important to the health of your underarms as they are one of our biggest producers of sweat.

Sweat, tight clothes and a new wax is a recipe for irritated skin!
