A Complete Guide to Aftercare For Waxing

When it comes to pampering yourself with a much needed wax, getting your hair removed is only half of the process. Following your waxing session, it is crucial to stick to basic aftercare instructions and skin care routines to ensure seamless hair regrowth that leaves your skin looking its best!

Everything you should do for waxing aftercare

Here at Denver Waxing, we believe that we – as professionals – should set up our clients for their best possible success. With that in mind, we have curated a cheat sheet for the best ways to take care of your skin after your hair removal session. Sensitive skin, ingrown hairs, irritation, whatever you’re worried about: we have the best post-wax care tips in store. Let’s dive in!

Use a cold compress to calm redness and irritation

Generally, following a wax, it is common for the average person to experience a bit of redness and irritation following their session – especially if there’s a brazilian wax or a bikini wax in the picture. Since the tugging of skin can cause mild irritation, it is important to combat any redness and inflammation with a cold compress. The cold temperature will calm any irritated skin cells and allow the skin to return to its normal state.

When applying a cold press, make sure the object you’re using is not making direct contact with the skin as it could result in further issues. Place a small cloth or a paper towel between your skin and your compress.

Wear loose fitting clothing

Before you even show up to the appointment, it is critical to plan ahead and choose an outfit that is going to be forgiving to the area(s) that you have waxed.  After all, you cannot participate in good aftercare if your skin is already irritated by the time you get home!

We recommend wearing loose fitting clothing and breathable materials such as cotton to your waxing session so your skin is comfortable, and doesn’t experience further irritation.

Exfoliate and moisturize at the right time

Any waxing-focused esthetician can tell you about the importance of hydration and exfoliation when it comes to waxing – both before and after your session. When it comes to aftercare, try to avoid exfoliating with a body scrub for at least two to three days following your wax, but maintain a regular routine of hydration. Your technician should apply some oils or lotions to your skin following your session, but it is up to you to ensure you upkeep a healthy, hydrating regimen that allows your skin to thrive.

Consider an ingrown hair serum

If you find yourself constantly battling with ingrown hairs, and find that exfoliating isn't doing the trick, purchase an ingrown hair serum. If you’re not sure where to begin, reach out to an esthetician and they can recommend the perfect product based on your skin needs.

Only apply esthetician-approved skincare products

While skin care is important, it is key to avoid overwhelming your skin. You can avoid other potential skin irritants and skin issues by only applying esthetician-approved skin care products. If you’re ever unsure of what you’re using – always feel free to ask!

What you need to avoid for waxing

Now that we’ve gone over your preemptive post-wax care needs, let’s go over what to avoid following your hair removal session.

Perfumed and scented moisturizers

While moisturizing is critical for your post-wax success, using certain moisturizers can set you back. The main thing to look out for is to avoid any scented, colored, or heavily perfumed moisturizer, especially if you already know you have sensitive skin.

Limit sun exposure to the waxed area

For the week following your wax, limiting the amount of sun that area gets is going to make sure your skin can heal appropriately. Exposing your freshly waxed skin to direct sunlight for extended periods of time can result in burns or even a potential rash. Take extra precaution following a facial waxing appointment!

Avoid swimming and hot water

This one may be hard, especially if you got a bikini wax or brazilian wax just to look your best at a pool party or on the beach. Even if that is the case, it is crucial to avoid submerging your skin in water – especially hot water – following your wax. This rule should be kept for at least 48 hours and applies to hot tubs, pools, bathtubs, and beaches.

Never pick or tweeze ingrown hairs

Ingrown hairs can happen, especially if dead skin and dry skin are allowed to accumulate. If this occurs, it is important to resist the urge to pluck, pick at, or tweeze the impacted hair follicles. When you pick at the hairs, it causes unnecessary damage and stress on the skin. This can result in additional swelling and even potential scarring. Stick with exfoliating and ingrown hair serums to do the trick!

Postpone exercise and other physical activities

Lastly, participating in physical activities should be avoided for at least 48 hours following your wax. This can include, but is not limited to, working out, intimate time with a partner, and sitting in a sauna. Not only can physical activity place unnecessary friction on your newly waxed area, but it can result in rashes and irritation due to the sweat being produced.
